Web hosting in 2007 is shaping up to be an interesting year in the hosting business. Last year was the year the major brands took over and the industry accelerated its climb from a cottage industry to a commodote industry.
Several large web hosting brands emerged over the last couple of years and really gained steamed last year. GoDaddy is the obvious one, but also, HostGator and iPower are two others that really gained a lot of brand power. It is getting harder and harder for smaller brands to survive. A lot of customers now default to a brand like Godaddy because they have heard of it and is it a national company. Several years ago there were no major brands like this for the average customer to default to.
This year in web hosting seems to be the year of the hosted application. Hosted applications are becoming the new growth market and niches for a lot of hosting companies. Everything from blogs to Outlook is being hosted. More and more software is being sold using the subscription model instead of license model. This means the application is hosted somewhere and users pay a subscription to use it . The old license model is when you buy the software and load it on your machine to run.
I see this trend continuing to the point that eventually your machine’s os will jsut be an internet browser and all of your applications will be internet based. We see this trend already starting with common Office applications like word processing, spreadhseets, calendars, etc.

I can’t believe it has been a month since I posted in this blog. I’ve been more active in our hostchart blog.
I just wrote a post there today about the future of personal web hosting and how it is evolving to use more hosted applications instead of shared hosting plans. MySpace, Blogger, Shutterfly, etc. all offer the individual ways to post personal websites, blogs, or family photo albums.
These applications will continue to attract personal web hosting customers away from developing small html or Frontpage websites. Why would non programmers mess with html when there is a site like MySpace that allows them to put up a personal webpage without learning any code.
HostingKnowledge now has almost 1000 articles and press releases. This is quite a lot of web hosting content that we have compiled and are always looking for excellent unique articles to publish.

We are almost at the start of another new year and web hosting companies beter be preparing their plans for this new year. With Web 2.0 , Hosted Applications, and major new Microsoft products being released, this looks to be a big year of change for web hosting companies. Web hosts need to adapt to take into account these changes or risk being left behind.
This is also true for web hosting directories and web hosting resource websites. With all of the changes hitting the web hosting markets it will also be a challenge for web hosting directories to provide relevant information to help webmasters find the best hosting company for them. Web hosting directories spend their time following the hosting business so they can continue to provide visitors with the information they need to analyize and select the right web hosts for their website.
New platforms like Ruby on Rails and DotNetNuke web hosting are becoming even more popular with web developers. What will be the next new development platform? Hosting directories need to provide information on these platforms because web developers are some of the people looking for help find the right hosts to provide these development platforms. Web hosting directories traditionally catered more to webmasters then web developers but web developers are much more valuable customers to web hosting companies because they develop many websites and drive re-occurring signups.

Canada web hosting is a large part of the web hosting industry. Next to US web hosting, canada web hosting seems to generate the second most signups for web hosting companies. Also, a number of large web hosts are located in canada.
I wonder why canada web hosting is so big. A lot of the major web hosting directories have dedicated pages for canada web hosts or even whole websites dedicated to this segment.
Maybe it is the long winters and excellent university systems. I look for a lot of web hosting and internet innovations to be driven by canadian internet companies.
